Your Gift, Your Choice

Our oldest son has always had a love for the game of football. He is very passionate about it and has an affinity for it. He loves football like I love to write and teach science. He lives for the game and studies it. He is always talking about football. He loves to play. I believe that God has gifted him with the ability to play. However, it takes more than being gifted to become great. I have always told him that skill and talent are only half of the package. God wants us to be fully developed so that what He has placed in us can flourish and operate at its full potential. I have always told him that God wants his ability to match his heart, mind, and spirit. If not, his gift is hindered. God wants him to be a whole man and He also wants us to be whole.

A few days ago, I watched X-Men: Rise of the Dark Phoenix. There was a scene in the movie where Jean meets Dr. Xavier after learning about the death of her parents in a car accident. He takes a pen out of his pocket and says, “This pen is a gift. You can use this gift to create something beautiful or stab someone in the eye with it. Regardless, it is still a gift”. He goes on to say, “It’s up to you to decide what you want to do with your gift”.

Our gifts are the same. God has placed so much inside of us. It is our job to find out what our gifts are and how to use them best to glorify God. I often tell my son that God wants him to use his gift to bring glory to God on this Earth but He also wants to make sure that he can become a suitable vessel for His power to flow through and activate the gift. What good is it to be great at something but lack the discipline needed to cultivate it? What good is it to be the best at something if your attitude and mind are all over the place? In Jeremiah 29:11, we are told that God has great plans for us. He plans for us to prosper and not be harmed as well as have a hope and a future. Those plans are connected to how we choose to use what He has given us. We have to choose whether or not we are going to use them in a way that creates positive change in this world or not. Proverbs 18:16 tells us that our gifts will make room for us. Our gifts are given to us from God, and He will use our gifts to bring glory to Him. Our gifts are not for our glorification and prosperity but solely to point back to Him. 

What has God gifted you to do? What has He placed in your hands? What are you going to do with what He has given you? I pray that you will be a good steward over your gift and use it to bring God’s light and love to those around you.

  3. Lovely message! God has gifted us with a wide array of gifts and talents for sure, and it’s just as you stated, “to bring glory to God.” Can you imagine what this world would truly be like if we did just that, rather than using what God gives us for our own benefit. I’m a firm believer that if we used our gifts right the world would be more bright..

    And Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship, 32 to design artistic works, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of artistic workmanship. 34 “And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, in him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver—those who do every work and those who design artistic works…Exodus 35:30-35

      1. Yes! This has become one of my favorite passages whenever I find myself talking to people about discovering and using their gifts! If we’re using them for any other purpose but to glorify God, we’re missing His mark!!
