Break Away

This season of my life has led me to pull away from certain things and focus on my spiritual growth as well as my health. During this time, I’ve also found myself enjoying the simplicity that comes with solitude and minimal distraction. Since becoming a stay at home mom, I’ve found great joy in being able to just get up, read my devotional, and bask in the peace of a quiet home. For mental purposes, we need to have such moments. Also, there are times when we must break away and spend time with the Lord.

I’m reminded of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He broke away from the disciples to pray for strength and direction. We need to do the same if we want God to speak to us and give us clear instructions for our lives. In a world so full of voices, we have to create an atmosphere for pure communication with our Father. One of the most important ways we can communicate with God is by reading and studying. Timothy 4:13 says, “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness”. How will we know what God desires if we don’t take His words at their true value? How will we be able to become more like Him without knowing His heart? Hebrews 4:12 says His word is living and active. It is real-life instruction for real-time living. It is also our guide to eternal living.

Also, I believe there are times when God will pull us away or sit us down to listen to Him. One day, I was called to jury duty. I took off from work that day and went to court. When I got there, I was sent to another location only to have to wait. After a few hours, it was canceled. I was very frustrated because I felt my time was wasted. So, I headed home. When I got there, I sat down, began to read my Bible, and pray. The Spirit of God took over and led me into a time of sweet fellowship and worship. While in the presence of the Lord, the Spirit spoke so softly to me and said, “I just wanted to spend time with you”. I became overwhelmed with emotion. Immediately, I started to repent for not spending as much time as I should have with the Lord lately. Most of all, I was so overwhelmed that God loves me so much that He would take me through that just to spend time with me.

How amazing? The God who created the heavens and the earth wants to commune with us. He wants to sit down and share a meal with us. He wants to spread the sweetness of His word and fill us with the savor of His holy presence. However, we have to want His company. We have to hunger and thirst for His righteousness. He is a gentleman. He won’t show up uninvited or force His way in. Revelations 3:20 reads, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me”.

Sometimes, He will allow us to be placed in situations that posture us to break away. Whether it be financial or health-wise, He will do whatever it takes to slow us down. I’ve found in these seasons His love is just as great and His grace is sufficient. It’s not punishment. It’s an opportunity to unplug ourselves from the busyness of life and plug into Him. If we aren’t careful, life will preoccupy us to the point where God is pushed to the back of our lives. He can’t lead from the back. It’s like trying to listen on a phone call while speeding with the windows down. The noise is too much. Likewise, the noise in our lives can become too much.

Our sweet Father is asking, “Will you let me in? Will you break away to meet with me?” It’s the best date we can have. We don’t have to dress up and look pretty. We can come as we are. He already has everything we need. He wants to adorn us with jewels from His heavenly treasure. He wants to prep our armor so we can be ready for the battle. He wants to refresh us so we can lay aside every weight and press towards the mark of His high calling for our lives.
