There once was a tree that stood broad and tall,
That would serve as a bridge to all that are lost.
A tree that would be cut up but held lots of power,
And bring eternal light to an ungodly hour.
A tree that would reach as high as the heavens,
That would serve as a path for the forgiven.
A tree that was robust and also very stout,
That would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings out.
A tree that would stand between a murderer and thief,
And deliver all nations and to give sin-free relief.
A tree upon which Christ would breathe his last breath on,
And that would one day seat him on his inherited throne.
I will forever cherish that old rugged tree,
For by it was saved a wretch like me.
One day when this life is over, I will lay it all down,
And give it all up in exchange for my heavenly crown.
