Galatians 6:7-8 King James Version (KJV)
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
The acts of sowing and reaping were mentioned often in the scriptures. In fact, the spiritual practice of reaping and sowing is synonymous to that in the natural. Farmers plant what they intend to harvest. If they plant potatoes, they expect potatoes to grow. Newton’s Third Law of Physics even states,” For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Why do we take these principles so lightly when it comes to spirituality? Is it not true that our choices determine our direction?
Whatever we plant into our lives does determine our spiritual growth. If we sow love, we will reap love. Likewise, if we sow hatred, we will reap hatred. Galatians 6:7 says, “God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”. This is the word of the Lord and we can’t take away from it but we can believe and obey it so we may reap its blessing.
We have to choose to be more like Jesus and walk by the Spirit or succumb to the flesh and feed into its carnal desires. If so, we are warned in Romans 8:6 that to be carnally minded brings death but being spiritually minded brings us peace and life. I think the latter sounds more appealing. Don’t you?
What does it mean to walk in the Spirit? It means that we yield to the righteous living and develop Christlike attributes. When we walk in the Spirit, its fruit (love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance) are displayed in our lives. The inner work that is taking place manifests itself on the outside and separates us from the world. On the contrary, when we cater to our flesh, ungodly attributes are mirrored such as adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, etc. Galatians 5 goes on to tell us that these things will prevent us from inheriting the kingdom of God.
God never promised us that we would not face temptation and fall short of His glory but He did promise in 1 Corinthians 10:3 that there is none that we can be overtaken by and that He will not provide us escape from. We have to want to make righteous decisions and do the will of God. The only way we can do so is by confessing and submitting our weak areas to God. As we allow Him to do the work in us, we will in return gradually gain our strength and become victorious in those areas. That is why it is so important for us to remain transparent and apt to ask for forgiveness when we make mistakes. It keeps us free for the grip of the enemy and his strongholds. Remember, God’s grace is sufficient enough to cover our sins and blot out every transgression. We just have to commit ourselves to live a crucified life, one that is governed by and Spirit led.
What is are we planting and nurturing? Certainly, we will harvest whatever it is whether it be good or bad.
