Training Ourselves to Hear the Voice of God

In a world full of noise, and distractions, hearing the voice of God may feel dauntung. Yet, the Bible reminds us that God wants to speak to His children. The challenge is not whether He speaks but whether we have trained ourselves to listen. So, that we, His sheep will know His voice and be able to follow Him.

How may we train our hearts to hear His voice?

Begin with the Scriptures

God’s Word is His primary way of speaking to us. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that the Word of God is “alive and active.” When we read the Bible, we immerse ourselves in His truth and become familiar with His character, values, and promises. Regular time in Scripture helps us discern His voice in the midst of life’s noise. The more we partake of God’s words, the more familiar we become with His voice.

Tip: Set aside time daily to read the Bible.  Start with a Psalm or particular book, devotional, or Bible app like YouVersion that has bible plans. Then, meditate on what God might be saying to you through the passage.

Develop a Heart for Prayer

Prayer is more than speaking; it is a conversation between us and God. In John 10:27, Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice.” Spending time in prayer helps us develop an intimacy with Him where recognizing His voice becomes natural.

Tip: Dedicate quiet time to simply listen during prayer instead of just speaking. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and open your heart to receive what God is saying. Once it’s revealed, ask His Spirit to lead you regarding what has been revealed to you.

Practice Stillness

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah heard God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire but in a gentle whisper. Our busy lives often make it difficult to hear this still, small voice. However, training ourselves to be still allows us to hear His whisper more clearly.

Tip: Create a habit of silence, even for five minutes a day. Sit in God’s presence without distraction and focus solely on Him.

Seek Godly Counsel

Often times, God speaks through His people. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” When we surround ourselves with mature, wise believers, their wisdom can help confirm God’s voice in our lives.

Tip: Be intentional about surrounding yourself and building relationships with people who walk authenthically and closely with God. Share your thoughts and listen to their guidance.

Obey What You Hear

Hearing God’s voice requires not only listening but also responding. James 1:22 reminds us to “be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.” Obedience to God’s prompting helps us grow in confidence and clarity in recognizing His voice. The more we obey, the more are inclined to receive the things of God.

Tip: When you sense God speaking—whether through Scripture, prayer, or wise counsel—act on it, even if it’s a small step of faith.

Test What You Hear

Not every voice we hear is from God. 1 John 4:1 warns us to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” Compare what you hear with Scripture. Does it line up? Remember, God’s Word is always confirmed (spoken and written). Then, seek peace in your spirit, and look for confirmation.

Tip: Write it down. Journal what you believe God is saying and ask for discernment. Later,  revisit your notes to see how God may be working in, through, and around you.

Be Patient and Persistent

Hearing God’s voice is a practice and a journey. There will be moments of clarity and times of silence. Nevertheless, trust that God is always present, even when He seems quiet or distant. Remind yourself that He promises never to leave or forsake you.

Tip: Commit to this process. Be diligent. Remind yourself of Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Ultimately, training ourselves to hear God’s voice is an act of faith and devotion. It requires great intentionality, trust, and surrender. The more we seek Him diligently, the more He will reveal Himself to us. As a result, our relationship with Him will deepen and our walks will strengthen. Remember, God is always speaking. But, are we listening?

I pray that this journey will lead you closer to the heart of God and that His voice becomes the guiding light in your life.

How have you learned to hear God’s voice? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

Let us continue to pray for one another. So, we may all grow in Him.

Blessings, my brothers and sisters.
