Life has a way of distracting our hearts in every direction. Work deadlines loom, family responsibilities call, bills need to be paid, goals to be met; before we know it, our eyes are fixed on all the activity around us and not on the One who holds it all together. But as soon as we look away from God, there is room for confusion, worry, and frustration to cloud our thinking. That’s why the Word tells us to “look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
Looking up, looking to Him, impacts everything about our lives. Here are three reasons we must look to Him for it all:
- Looking Up Keeps Us Grounded in Truth
When we look to God, His Word is the measure of our decisions. Personally, it keeps us from being swayed by opinion, trend, and pressure. Professionally, it keeps us with integrity and excellence when others will settle. God’s truth anchors us so we walk with boldness and not bewilderment.
- Looking Up Builds Our Strength
Life is tough. If we don’t have God, exhaustion hits us so quickly. But when we look to Him, we find strength that is beyond our own. Individually, He refreshes our energy to love our family and friends, weather tough times, and get through setbacks. Vocationally, He provides us with wisdom, creativity, and endurance to complete the tasks before us. Looking up reminds us that we’re not going about life on our own power, it’s His Spirit that works in and through us.
- Looking Up Gives Us Hope Again
Hope evaporates when we look only at our circumstances. Bills pile up, opportunities don’t work out, and our relationships fray. But hope comes back to us when we look up and remember that God is bigger than our problems. For me, that means that we can believe for healing in our houses, for restoration in our hearts, and for wisdom for the future. Professionally, it translates to setbacks are not the end. God can open doors no man can shut. Looking up makes us live from fear to faith.
When our eyes are lifted to God, we see clearly, we have peace, and we are strong that no circumstance can steal away from us.
A Prayer
Father,
Teach us to keep our eyes on You. Forgive us for the times we’ve been distracted and allowed circumstances to overwhelm us. Remind us that You are our source of all we need, at home, at the office, and in our hearts. Root us in Your truth, energize us with Your Spirit, and restore our hope when things get difficult. Help us to look to You first in everything and trust Your Word above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Oh, yes! These are all reasons I MUST start my day with God and His Word; with my quiet time of just sitting with Him and adoring Him, soaking Him in.
And then there’s the rest of the day…
Yes, Lord, please give us those taps on the shoulders we need to remind us to look up, always.
